CHARLESTON, SC -- Abigail Jegede and Yirsy Quéliz combined to score 33 total points, but the Huskies fell to the Charleston Cougars 89-41 on the road Sunday.
The Huskies (1-19, 0-11) had two players score in double figures, led by Jegede, who had 17 points. Queliz added 16 points, and Alyssa Staten added five points and nine rebounds.
How It Happened
Northeastern fell behind early but used a Quéliz three-pointer and Jegede and-one to keep the game within a score. The Huskies trailed 28-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Huskies lost ground in the second quarter and faced a 49-21 halftime deficit.
After halftime, Northeastern's deficit continued to grow, and the Huskies faced a 70-31 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Northeastern knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 10 total points.
Charleston kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 73-31 advantage before Northeastern went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Queliz's three, to shrink the deficit to 73-36 with 8:41 to go in the contest. The Cougars responded and outscored the Huskies the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 89-41. Northeastern took advantage of two Charleston turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points from those takeaways. Quéliz's four three-pointers matched a season-high for the Dominican Republic native.
Next, the Huskies return to Cabot for a two-game home slate. They start by hosting N.C. A&T on Friday, February 14 at 7 p.m., and follow with their Black History Month game against Hofstra on Sunday, February 16 at 1 p.m.
