BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Northeastern University baseball team (10-6) secured a 6-3 victory over Harvard University (0-11) on Saturday afternoon at Friedman Diamond. A strong offensive showing late in the game, highlighted by two home runs from
Ryan Gerety, propelled the Huskies to their tenth win of the season, and their first eighth-inning comeback of the season.
- The game remained scoreless through the first six innings. Harvard broke the deadlock in the top of the seventh with a solo shot the left field, giving the Crimson a 1-0 lead. Harvard extended its lead later in the inning to 3-0 on a two-RBI single.
- Northeastern responded immediately in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Gerety sparked the comeback with a solo home run to left center, the first of his career, which broke up Harvard's no-hitter and put the Huskies on the board.
- The Huskies would load the bases after a Will Fosberg single, an Alex Lane hit-by-pitch, and a pinch-hit walk to Gregory Bozzo. The Huskies pinch hit again, and Cam Maldonado drew a full count walk to bring in Fosberg to cut the deficit down to one.
- After a shutout 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning by Brett Dunham the Huskies loaded the bases again in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff double from Carmelo Musacchia, and a hit-by-pitch to Harrison Feinberg, both runners pulled off the double steal to put runners in scoring position with no outs.
- After Jack Goodman drew a four-pitch walk, Ryan Gerety delivered a grand slam to left center, his second opposite field homer of they day to take the lead, 6-3.
- Starter Aiven Cabral was one out away from finishing the seventh inning with just four hits and one run allowed - his last two runners both scored, with his final line at 6.2 IP, four hits, three runs, and three walks. Another strong strikeout performance for the staff started with Cabral, who finished with seven strikeouts.
- Brett Dunham picked up the win in relief, working 1.1 innings, allowing one hit, and striking out two.
- Getting the three-out save was Jack Beauchesne, who worked around a leadoff double to get a fly out, pop out, and ground out to secure his third save of the season.
- It was NU's first win of the season when trailing after seven innings, and first win of the year when allowing the first run of the game (1-4 record in both scenarios).
- Gerety's grand slam was Northeastern's first of the season, and NU's first hit of the year with the bases loaded. Gerety is now batting .328 on the year, the third-highest on the team, after a 2-for-3 day on Saturday.
The Huskies look to win all three games of the series with game three taking place Sunday, March 16th at Friedman Diamond. That game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on FloCollege.
