BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Northeastern University baseball team (12-6) defeated Merrimack College (5-14-1) by a score of 10-0 in eight innings on Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The Huskies scored in bunches, notching multiple runs in the first, third, and sixth innings, with one more in the eighth to finish the game via run rule.
- Northeastern took an early lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. With Jack Goodman on third and Cam Maldonado on second after a hit by pitch, walk, and a balk, Carmelo Musacchia flied out to right field for a sacrifice fly, scoring Goodman.
- Will Fosberg followed with a double down the left field line, scoring Maldonado and extending the lead to 2-0.
- The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the 3rd inning, until Musacchia scored on another double to left center by Fosberg to make it 3-0. Later in the inning, with Fosberg still on second, Alex Lane homered to center field, his first of the year, to make it 5-0.
- In the bottom of the 6th inning, Northeastern added four more runs to extend the lead to 9-0. Ryan Gerety scored on an RBI single up the middle by Goodman, and Goodman scored on a 2-RBI home run to left field by Maldonado, his first at home.
- Musacchia scored the final run of the inning sixth on an RBI single to center field by Will Fosberg, his third RBI base hit of the afternoon.
- The Huskies ended the game one inning earlier with their 10th run coming in the eighth inning, on an RBI single from Carter Bentley, scoring Eric Cha from second.
- Getting the start for NU was Ryan McCarroll, who threw 3.0 scoreless innings allowing just one hit and one walk. He recorded four strikeouts on the afternoon.
- Carson Walsh (1-0) earned the win for Northeastern, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out two in his first appearance of the season.
- Closing the game was Jack Cropper, who struck out the side in the seventh and worked around a walk and hit in the eighth with two more strikeouts for a career-high five punch outs.
- The Huskies stole five bags and tallied seven walks and two HBP's on offense – Northeastern collected 14 hits on the afternoon, the second-highest hit total in a game this season.
- Northeastern has won four straight, all at Friedman Diamond, and eight of their last nine games.
- The win is Northeastern's fourth shutout of the season, which as of Monday's stat rankings is tied for first in the NCAA.
Northeastern travels across town to face Boston College (8-9) at Harrington Athletics Village on Wednesday afternoon, March 19
th. That game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
