Northeastern Narrowly Misses Burk Cup Win On Sunday

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Northeastern men's rowing team opened up its spring season in Cherry Hill, N.J. against the University of Pennsylvania falling in the annual Burk Cup by less than a second. 

  •  Third varsity started off the racing serious with an effort that ran all the way down the track. Penn and Northeastern kept the race with in a few seats for the entire 2000m. Both boats leading at various parts in the race. The race finished in the home team's favor as Penn's third boat grabbed a first place finish with a time of 5:47.75. Northeastern finished second narrowly missing first place with a time of 5:48 flat. 
  • Northeastern took a slight initial lead to start the second varsity race but Penn responded which resulted in both boats trading bows for the rest of the course. However Penn won the race in a photo finish by putting their bow ball inches ahead of Northeastern.
  • Penn scorched out of the blocks to take a quick five seat lead in the first varsity race. Northeastern responded by executing a commanding base rhythm which put them out one seat ahead of Penn by 700 meters in. Penn responded well in the third 500 and was able to put their bow deck in front in the last twenty strokes. Northeastern finished second with a time of 5:33.46 while Penn won the cup with a time of 5:32.99.
  • Northeastern's varsity four raced three Penn fours in the event. All the boats got off the line well and the Penn A four got out three seats in the second 500. Through the second half of the race Penn A moved to bow to stern as Northeastern held off charges from Penn B and Penn C. The Huskies finished second with a time of 6:34.94 being narrowly edged by Penn's varsity four A boat with a time of 6:31.61. The Huskies bested the Quakers varsity four B and C boats.

The Huskies head down to Sarasota, Fla. to race against Yale, Brown, Harvard and Washington on Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29.
