BROOKLINE, Mass. – In a near-perfect game for starting pitcher
Max Gitlin, the Northeastern Huskies (15-8) took down the UConn Huskies (10-13) by a score of 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Gitlin made it to the ninth inning with no base runners allowed, with the only blemish on his line ending up as a one-out double in the final inning. Gitlin bounced back to induce a pop out and a fly out to finish the complete game shutout, his first complete game effort as a Northeastern Husky.
- Northeastern struck first in the third inning, after lead off walks to Cam Maldonado and Jack Goodman, a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Gerety put them into scoring position with just one out.
- With Maldonado on third, Harrison Feinberg hit a ball high and deep to left center that was caught, but was deep enough for Maldonado to tag up and score.
- The Huskies added two more runs in the fourth on a bunt single from Carmelo Musacchia, that was thrown away past first base and allowed Jack Doyle to score from second and Eric Cha to score from first for the 3-0 lead.
- Gitlin worked all nine innings on 116 pitches, the 10th complete game of his career, throwing nine complete games at Clark University. He got 13 fly outs and 13 ground outs from his defense, and one strike out.
- It's Northeastern's second complete game shutout of the season, and both have occurred in the last three games, after Aiven Cabral through a seven-inning 10-0 complete game shutout against Towson.
- Gitlin has Northeastern's first nine-inning complete game performance since Cabral's 2023 nine-inning outing against Delaware (W, 9-0).
- The Huskies have shut out six teams this season, which is good for first in the nation as of the final out.
- It's the third game of the season in which Northeastern held the opposing offense to just one hit – the other two were against Indiana State (2/22) and Towson (3/22). It was the fourth game of the year that the Husky pitching staff walked no batters.
The Huskies head to Stony Brook, New York this weekend for a three-game series with the Seawolves in CAA play. That series kicks off on Friday, March 28
th at 2 p.m. on FloCollege.
