STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Going for the weekend sweep, Northeastern University (18-8, 5-1 CAA) defeated Stony Brook University (11-14, 1-5 CAA) by a score of 10-2 on Sunday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
Stony Brook hit a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning to take its first lead of the weekend at 2-1, but Northeastern's
Jordan Gottesman responded by retiring 14 batters in a row, keeping the game within reach for the NU offense which would go on to score five runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to sweep the series.
- Northeastern opened the game with a one-out home run from Cam Maldonado over the left field wall to take the early 1-0 lead. Stony Brook answered with a pair of hits to score on an RBI double and tie the game up 1-1 after the first.
- Stony Brook grabbed its first lead of the series in the fourth, when a solo home run to left broke the 1-1 stalemate.
- The Husky offense stalled out until the sixth inning, when Northeastern put up five runs in the frame to retake the lead. After a lead off double by Carmelo Musacchia, and one-out walk to Ryan Gerety, Jack Goodman hit his third homer of the weekend, a no-doubter well past the left field wall, to retake the lead 4-2.
- Northeastern continued to bring in runs in the sixth, with an infield single for Harrison Feinberg, a hit-by-pitch to Jack Doyle, and a walk to Will Fosberg to load the bases, and another to Alex Lane to bring in a run.
- With the bases still loaded, Gregory Bozzo put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and score NU's sixth run of the game.
- In the seventh, Northeastern added on four more runs on a pair of hits, a walk, a hit by pitch, and a sac fly, to lead 10-2 after seven.
- The seventh began with another lead off double by Musacchia, a steal of third, and a walk to Maldonado.
- With runners on the corners and no outs, Ryan Gerety dropped a perfect bunt right on the first base foul line to score Musacchia from third.
- With one out, Harrison Feinberg reached on a walk to load the bases, followed by a walk to Jack Doyle and a hit-by-pitch to Will Fosberg to bring in two more.
- Alex Lane hit a sac-fly to deep right field with the bases loaded to bring in the final run of the seventh by way of Feinberg.
- Lefty starter Will Jones made his return to the rotation, working an abbreviated two-inning start in which he allowed just one run on two hits, and struck out two.
- Gottesman took over in the third, working six innings with just the home run in the fourth allowed, and one walk. He struck out five batters in his outing.
- Working the ninth was freshman Andrew Basel, who tossed a 1-2-3 inning with two strike outs.
- It's Northeastern's first CAA series sweep of the season, after sweeping the Seawolves to end the 2024 regular season. It's Northeastern's third weekend series sweep of the season, going 4-0 over San Diego State on the road and 3-0 over Harvard at home.
- Cam Maldonado and Jack Goodman each hit home runs in all three games of the weekend series – it's the second three-game homer streak for NU this season, after Maldonado homered in three straight games against San Diego State.
The Huskies return home for one game this Tuesday, April 1
st before heading back on the road for CAA play next weekend at Campbell. The Huskies host Boston College in the opening round of the 2025 Baseball Beanpot, with game time scheduled for 2:30 p.m. from Friedman Diamond. That game can be seen on FloCollege and NESN.
