HONOLULU, Hawaii – In a 12-inning thriller to end the series, the Northeastern Huskies (4-5) got 10.0 two-run innings out of starter
Jack Bowery, but fell in the 12
th inning to the Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors (10-2) by a score of 3-2 on Monday evening at Murakami Stadium.
- The Rainbows got off to a quick start, scoring two runs in three hits and an error to lead 2-0.
- Northeastern answered right back with a one-out single up the middle by Ryan Gerety. His single scored Justin Bosland, who led off the inning with a four pitch walk and stole second.
- The Huskies tied it in the fifth – this time Gerety was the runner, sprinting from first to home and beating a tag on a double to right-center field by Cam Maldonado.
- From there Bowery went to work, retiring 18 straight batters from the fifth all the way to extra innings, keeping the Warriors' hot offense quiet.
- Northeastern got a runner in scoring position in the ninth in Jack Doyle on a two-out double, and in the 10th with back to back singles from Maldonado and Alex Lane to lead off the inning, but Hawaii was able to get out of both scenarios.
- Bowery finished his night in the 11th, after allowing just five hits, no walks, and striking out eight. He threw 108 pitches on the night before we was relieved by closer Jack Beauchesne.
- In the 11th, Beauchesne faced a runner in scoring position right away, but dealt with it with a ground out back to the mound, a ground out to third, and a bases-loaded ground ball to Jack Doyle, which he grabbed and dove to the second base bag to get the final force out.
- In the 12th, the Huskies were unable to get on base, and a pair of errors in the bottom of the inning allowed the Rainbows to hit a single to center field, their first hit since the fourth inning, to walk it off.
- Bowery's effort is the first 10+ inning performance by a Husky pitcher in the modern era (2000-onward). It's the most innings pitched by one pitcher since Devin Monds in 2005, who made it to the 10th inning but was relieved before the Huskies went on to win in the bottom of the 10th, 1-0 against Hartford.
Northeastern will head to San Diego, California this weekend for a four-game series with the San Diego State Aztecs. That series begins Thursday evening, March 6
th at 6 p.m. pacific time.
