Northeastern Wears Down Kansas State, Takes Game One 11-4

BROOKLINE, Mass. -- The Northeastern Huskies (26-9) overcame an early deficit to defeat the Kansas State Wildcats (23-13) by a score of 11-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, the Huskies responded with eight unanswered runs and got strong bullpen performances to shut down the Wildcats. Cooper McGrath earned his first win of the season (1-0), while the Northeastern offense tallied 11 hits and capitalized on three Kansas State errors.

  • Kansas State jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning on a pair of homers, a one-out solo shot and a two-out two-run blast for the 3-0 advantage.
  • The Huskies answered immediately in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on a Jack Doyle RBI single and a throwing error by the Wildcats' shortstop.
  • Northeastern tied the game in the second inning when Carmelo Musacchia scored from third on an RBI infield single from Cam Maldonado to make it 3-3.
  • The Huskies took the lead for good in the third inning, scoring two unearned runs on a throwing error by the Wildcats' second baseman to take a 5-3 lead.
  • Northeastern added three more runs in the fourth inning, with Jack Doyle driving in Cam Maldonado with a fielder's choice and Will Fosberg adding a two-run single to extend the lead to 8-3.
  • After Kansas State scored an unearned run in the sixth to make it 8-4, Harrison Feinberg responded with a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the inning, his team-leading 12th of the season.
  • Jack Doyle capped the scoring with a two-run double down the right field line in the eighth inning for the 11-4 final. He finished the day with four total RBIs.
  • Cooper McGrath earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit while striking out three batters.
  • After starter Charlie Walker allowed three runs in two innings, the Husky bullpen dominated the rest of the way, allowing just one unearned run over the final seven frames. Jack Bowery (3.0 IP, 0 ER) and Jack Beauchesne (2.0 IP, 0H, 0R, 3K) combined with McGrath to hold Kansas State to just three hits over the final seven innings.
  • The Huskies were aggressive on the basepaths, stealing seven bases in the contest. Ryan Gerety, Cam Maldonado (2), Harrison Feinberg (2), Jack Doyle, and Carmelo Musacchia each recorded at least steal.
  • Northeastern struck out just four times while drawing six walks in the contest, continuing their strong plate discipline this season.
  • It's the program's first win over Kansas State in just three tries, after falling to the Wildcats in 2010 (6-1, neutral site) and 2024 (9-8 (11), Friedman Diamond).

The Huskies will host Kansas State again tomorrow, Wednesday, April 16, for the second game of their midweek series at Friedman Diamond. First pitch is at 2 p.m. on FloCollege and NESN.
