BROOKLINE, Mass. -- The Northeastern Huskies (27-9) completed a two-game midweek sweep of the Kansas State Wildcats (23-14) with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Lefty starter
Max Gitlin (5-1) earned his fifth win of the season with a strong performance, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven batters over five innings. The Husky bullpen was untouchable, as
Carson Walsh and
Brett Dunham combined for four near-perfect innings to close out the game, with Dunham earning his first save of the season.
- Northeastern struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Cam Maldonado doubled down the right field line, advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt, and scored on Harrison Feinberg's sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
- Kansas State responded in the second inning with an RBI single to left-center to tie the game at 1-1.
- The Huskies regained the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring twice with some aggressive base running. Jack Doyle was hit by a pitch, and took third on a Carmelo Musacchia single. Doyle scored on Justin Bosland's bunt single, and Carmelo Musacchia then executed a steal of home while Bosland took second to give Northeastern a 3-1 advantage.
- The Wildcats tied the game at 3-3 in the third inning on an RBI single and a ground out.
- Maldonado gave Northeastern the lead for good in the bottom of the third, connecting on a solo home run to right center for a 4-3 lead.
- The Huskies added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Maldonado walked, advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, and scored on Jack Goodman's RBI double to make it 5-3.
- Gitlin's seven K's was the most for the grad. student in a Husky uniform, as he held the Wildcats to just three runs in his five frames of work.
- Walsh was dominant in relief, tossing three near-perfect innings with two strikeouts. His 3.0 innings was a new career-high, and he only allowed one baserunner in the eighth, before a two-out fly ball to the left field spelled trouble for the Huskies - Harrison Feinberg timed his jump perfectly and pulled the ball back into play to retire the Wildcats.
- Dunham struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure his first save of the season, the second of his career, to fully slam the door shut and complete the series sweep.
- Maldonado led the Huskies' offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, an RBI, and three runs scored. Justin Bosland added an RBI single and a stolen base.
- The Northeastern defense committed no errors on the day and turned one double play, an unassisted line out double play by Bosland at first.
- The all-time series between Northeastern and Kansas State is now knotted at 2-2, after wins for the Wildcats in 2010 and 2024 were met with two Husky wins in 2025.
- Northeastern improves to 13-1 at Friedman Diamond, 6-2 in midweek contests, and 17-7 in non-conference action.
The Huskies close out the home stand this weekend with a three-game series against the College of Charleston. That series is set to kick off Friday afternoon, April 18th at 2:30 p.m. on FloCollege and NESN+.
