Gottesman Completes Weekend Shutout Sweep Over Charleston

BROOKLINE, Mass. — The Northeastern Huskies (30-9, 13-2 CAA) completed their weekend sweep of the Charleston Cougars (22-16, 7-8 CAA) with a dominant 10-0 seven-inning shutout victory on Sunday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.

For the second Sunday in a row, it was lefty Jordan Gottesman getting the start and providing seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts. Gottesman tossed a one-hit complete game shutout to earn his fifth win of the season, and capping off 25 straight shutout innings by Northeastern pitching over the Charleston offense. The Huskies' offense notched 10 runs on 11 hits in just six innings, led by multi-hit days by Gregory Bozzo, Jack Doyle, and Carmelo Musacchia.
  • After two scoreless innings to start the game, Northeastern broke through in the second with four straight hits to start off the frame, which led to four straight scoring plays for NU. After a leadoff single by Musacchia, and a follow up single by Matt Brinker, Alex Lane opened the scoring with a ground-rule double down the left field line that scored Musacchia.
  • The Huskies scored on the following three plays, starting with Gregory Bozzo delivering an RBI bunt single, Ryan Gerety driving in a run on a sacrifice bunt, and Cam Maldonado capping the frame with an RBI single down the right field line for a 4-0 lead.
  • Northeastern added an unearned run in the fourth inning when Bozzo reached on a walk, stole second, then advanced to third on a throwing error. He went on to score on Gerety's sacrifice fly to right field, his second RBI of the day.
  • The Huskies made it 6-0 in the fifth when Harrison Feinberg walked, stole second, and scored on Musacchia's RBI single to right field.
  • Northeastern put the game away in the sixth inning with four more runs. Lane walked and later scored on a balk, while Gerety, Feinberg, and Jack Doyle all drove in runs to extend the lead to 10-0.
  • Gottesman was dominant on the mound, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out nine Charleston batters. He retired 11 consecutive Cougars at one point and needed just 79 pitches to complete the seven-inning shutout.
  • It was the second straight start for Gottesman in which he worked seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. Last Sunday against Hofstra he scattered six hits across his seven innings with no walks or hit-by-pitches.
  • The Huskies were once again aggressive on the basepaths, stealing seven bases in the contest, putting their weekend total to 15 steals on 17 tries.
  • This marked Northeastern's 12th shutout of the season, extending their NCAA-leading total and shattering the previous program record in the stat by five.
  • It's the first weekend shutout sweep by Northeastern since the 2011 season, where the Huskies outscored Hofstra 9-0 (3-0, 1-0, 5-0) at Friedman Diamond in early April.
  • After allowing three runs early to Kansas State on Wednesday, the Northeastern pitching staff capped off the week with 31 scoreless innings pitched in a row.
  • The Huskies are off to their second-best CAA record through 15 games in the Glavine Era, with only the 2021 team beating the current 13-2 record with a 15-0 record.
The Huskies now head on the road for a three-game series at Monmouth beginning Friday, April 25 at 3 p.m. That series can be seen on FloCollege.
