Huskies Tally 13th Shutout, Take Series At Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- The Northeastern Huskies (32-9, 15-2 CAA) secured their sixth consecutive CAA series victory with a big 10-0 shutout over the Monmouth Hawks (20-23, 7-10 CAA) on Saturday afternoon at MU Baseball Field.

Junior right-hander Aiven Cabral delivered another strong start on the mound, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out six batters to earn his seventh win of the season. Cooper McGrath closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning as the Huskies recorded their NCAA-leading 13th shutout of the season. Designated hitter Matt Brinker tallied four more RBIs in the contest to bring his weekend total to eight.
  • Northeastern struck first in the second inning when Matt Brinker doubled to right center, driving in Jack Doyle (walk) and Carmelo Musacchia (single) for a 2-0 lead.
  • The Huskies added two more runs in the third, with Jack Goodman delivering an RBI single to score Cam Maldonado, and Carmelo Musacchia drove in another run on a single to left field to score Goodman.
  • The game broke open in the fifth inning when Northeastern poured on six runs. Goodman delivered a two-run single, Musacchia added an RBI on a fielder's choice, and Brinker capped the outburst with a two-run double. Ryan Gerety completed the scoring with an RBI hustle double to make it 10-0.
  • Brinker led the Northeastern offense, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs, while Jack Goodman went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
  • Cabral improved to 7-2 on the season, walking just two while scattering four hits across his six innings of work. He induced eight groundouts as part of an efficient 83-pitch outing.
  • McGrath entered the game in the seventh, looking to hold the 10-run lead and end the game early via run rule. After a leadoff walk, the tall righty struck out his next batter and got a ground ball to Goodman to start a 6-4-3 double play to finish the game.
  • The shutout was Northeastern's nation-leading 13th of the season, and its first in a true road game. After Northeastern blanked Indiana State in a neutral site double header, their next 10 shutouts came at Friedman Diamond.
  • Northeastern has won all six CAA series on the year, and has only dropped one weekend series all season. They've won eight weekend series in a row dating back to a 4-0 series win over San Diego State in early March.
The series concludes on Sunday, April 27th at 1 p.m. at MU Baseball Field in West Long Branch.
