NU Sweeps Monmouth, Wins Game Three In Extras

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – After enduring five unanswered runs from the Monmouth Hawks (20-24, 7-11 CAA) in the fifth and seventh innings to tie the game, the Northeastern Huskies (33-9, 16-2 CAA) held on in the 11th for a 8-5 win at MU Baseball Field to secure the weekend sweep of the Hawks.

Northeastern held an early 5-0 lead through the top of the fifth, but the Hawks rallied for five runs in the middle frames to tie things up before the Huskies plated three in the top of the 11th.

  • Northeastern struck first for the third straight game of the series, tallying a run in the second inning off the bat of Alex Lane. After an infield single by Jack Doyle and a bunt by Carmelo Musacchia, both runners moved into scoring position on the overthrow, and Doyle scored on Lane's grounder to shortstop.
  • The Huskies added on three more runs in the third – an RBI single from Cam Maldonado scored Gregory Bozzo, and a sac fly by Harrison Feinberg scored Ryan Gerety for the 3-0 lead.
  • Maldonado pulled off the double steal with Gerety in that inning for his 81st career stolen bag, which set a new program record. He followed that up with a steal of third on the next at-bat, and scored from third on a balk.
  • A pair of doubles in the fifth added NU's fifth run of the day – a one-out hustle double by Ryan Gerety set up a two-out RBI double down the left field line by Feinberg, his second RBI of the day, to push the lead to 5-0.
  • The Hawks answered back on a trio of unearned runs in the fifth on three hits and two errors, to cut the lead down to 5-3.
  • Monmouth went on to tie the game at 5-5 in the seventh, after three straight two-out hits scored the first two earned runs of the game for the Hawks.
  • Northeastern starter Jordan Gottesman allowed just two earned runs in 6.2 innings of work, on five hits and two walks. He struck out four batters as his shutout streak ended at 19.2 straight innings.
  • Gottesman left the game with two runners on and a two-run lead, but a pair of infield singles brought them in to tie the game. Jack Bowery settled things down for the Husky defense, throwing 1.1 innings of relief allowing just two singles, no walks, while striking out two.
  • Taking the mound for the top of the ninth was Brett Dunham, who set down the Hawks 1-2-3 to force extra innings.
  • The Huskies got back on the basepaths in the 11th with a leadoff single by Cam Maldonado. He would reach second on a wild pitch and score on a double from Harrison Feinberg, retaking the lead 6-5.
  • With Feinberg on third after a fly out, Carmelo Musacchia placed another perfect bunt that dropped for an RBI single and a 7-5 lead.
  • A two-out single to center field by Alex Lane sent Musacchia to second – Musacchia rounded third and forced a throw from the Monmouth centerfielder that went past third and out of play, allowing him to score Northeastern's eighth run of the game.
  • After a quick two outs from Dunham in the frame, a walk and a single put two runners in scoring position for the Hawks. Dunahm got one final fly out to left field to end the game after 11 innings. He earned his second win of the season (2-0) working 3.0 shutout innings with just two hits and a walk. He struck out a career-high five batters, including all three outs of the 10th inning.
  • Northeastern has pushed its active winning streak to 12 games, which is the longest NU streak since the 2021 season. The Huskies have won nine straight CAA games in that stretch.
  • NU is now 2-2 in extra-inning games this season, 1-1 in CAA extra-inning games.

The Huskies return home for five straight New England games, starting with the Baseball Beanpot Championship game this Tuesday, April 29th at Fenway Park vs. Harvard. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., or 40 minutes after the consolation game (whichever comes last) and will stream on ESPN+ and NESN NATION.
