BOSTON, Mass. – In the late game at Fenway Park, Northeastern University (34-9) claimed their eighth Baseball Beanpot Championship on Tuesday night in back-to-back fashion, topping the Harvard Crimson (11-23) by a 5-4 final score.
The Huskies' pitching staff held Harvard to four hits on the evening with graduate student
Max Gitlin going just over five innings throwing two Ks allowing two hits and one run.
Jack Beauchesne stepped in for an inning and an out allowing one hit to go with one strikeout. Senior
Brett Dunham earned the save pitching the final frame, allowing one hit while striking out one.
- The Beanpot scoring opened in the top second inning with visiting Harvard hitting a line drive the right field line for a solo home run. Northeastern would have their response in the bottom of the inning as senior Jack Doyle earned a base taking a pitch to the shoulder and put himself in scoring position stealing second base. After a ground out, graduate student Alex Lane doubled to center field pushing Doyle around the horn.
- The match up would remain level at one run a-piece until the floodgates would begin to open for the Huskies in the bottom of the fifth inning. Opening batter junior Carmelo Musacchia sliced a triple off the wall, immediately posing a scoring threat. Lane would deliver for the Northeastern again with a slug to left field to push Musacchia home and earn a stand up spot on second base. Junior Matt Brinker kept the streak alive, singling to center field pushing the runner to third. The Huskies faced their first out on a sacrifice fly from graduate student Gregory Bozzo while simultaneously scoring their second run of the inning. After loading the horn with walked batters the Crimson would push a run around on a Harrison Feinberg walk giving the Huskies a 4-1 lead. The final run of the inning came from a ground out to the pitcher from Jack Goodman allowing sophomore Ryan Gerety to cross home plate. Northeastern wrapped up the inning taking a 5-1 lead over Harvard.
- Harvard threatened to take away the Northeastern victory loading the bases in the top of the ninth inning. The Crimson would score their first run of the inning on a wild pitch from Northeastern, and continue to score two more runs on a single to left field. A strikeout from senior Brett Dunham and a line out to third would finalize the Huskies back-to-back victory.
- It's the first back-to-back Beanpot titles for Northeastern Baseball since the 1994 and 1995 seasons.
