BROOKLINE, Mass. — The Northeastern Huskies (35-9, 17-2 CAA) opened up another CAA series with a Friday win, taking game one over the Delaware Blue Hens (25-19, 10-9 CAA) by a score of 5-3 at Friedman Diamond.
Graduate student Will Jones improved to 9-0 on the season, working five solid innings while allowing just three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Junior Charlie Walker delivered four scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts to earn his sixth save of the season, allowing just a pair of singles on the afternoon.
- After falling behind 2-0 in the third inning, the Huskies responded immediately with a four-run outburst in the bottom half of the frame. Will Fosberg started the rally with a triple to right center, followed by a walk to Chris Walsh.
- Ryan Gerety doubled to right field to score Fosberg, and Cam Maldonado followed with an RBI single through the right side to bring home Walsh.
- Harrison Feinberg capped the inning with a two-run double to right center, scoring both Gerety and Maldonado to give Northeastern a 4-2 lead.
- Delaware cut the deficit to 4-3 in the sixth inning on an RBI single, ending the day for Will Jones, who left with a one-run lead. Walker would enter an get three straight outs with the tying run on second base to hold the one-run lead.
- The Huskies answered back in the bottom of the sixth when Matt Brinker doubled to left field, driving in Carmelo Musacchia who had walked to open the inning.
- Walker shut down the Blue Hens over the final four frames, allowing just two hits while striking out four to secure the victory. The junior right-hander worked out of trouble in the seventh and closed the door with a game-ending double play in the ninth.
- Feinberg led the Huskies with two RBIs, while Gerety, Maldonado and Brinker each added one. The Huskies showed their speed on the base paths, with Gerety and Maldonado (2) each recording at least one stolen base.
- It was just the seventh game of the season for Northeastern decided by two runs or less. The Huskies are now 4-3 in those games.
- Northeastern is now 5-6 this season in games where its opponent scores first.
The series continues on Saturday, May 2nd with Northeastern's Senior Day and Alumni Day – first pitch is currently scheduled for 1 p.m. on FloCollege, with Senior Day ceremonies to begin around 12:30.
