Camels Spoil The Sweep In Eight Innings

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Looking to complete the series sweep over their newest conference rival, the Northeastern Huskies (21-9, 7-2 CAA) stumbled on Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium, falling to the Campbell Camels (14-17, 5-4 CAA) by a score of 18-8 in eight innings.

The Huskies already claimed the series over the Camels with a Saturday win, their third straight CAA series win, but had their nine-game winning streak halted in the game three loss. Despite a 6-1 fourth-inning lead, the Huskies were unable to sweep their second straight CAA conference weekend.

  • Campbell struck first in the second inning, loading the bases with two singles and a two-out error, and a close pitch was called ball four to walk in a run. The Huskies would strand the bases loaded with a ground out to shortstop to hold the Camels to just the one run.
  • Northeastern answered back in the third, putting up a crooked number on three hits, a couple walks and an error.
  • The third inning kicked off with a lead off single from Gregory Bozzo, Northeastern's first hit of the afternoon, and a sacrifice bunt from Henry DiGiorgio was thrown away to foul territory, allowing Bozzo to reach third and DiGiorgio to land on first.
  • Carmelo Musacchia followed that out with another sac bunt that put DiGiorgio into scoring position with just one out. After an intentional walk to Cam Maldonado to load the bases, Ryan Gerety drew a full count walk to score Northeastern's first run of the day by way of Bozzo.
  • The next batter, Harrison Feinberg, cleared the bags with his opposite field blast to the right field wall, a grand slam for his ninth homer of the season, giving Northeastern a 5-1 lead.
  • Jack Doyle followed up Feinberg's blast with a solo shot of his own to left field to push Northeastern's lead to 6-1.
  • Campbell got one run back in the bottom of the frame after a one-out double and two-out RBI single scored the Camels' second run of the day. Campbell had a line drive to right field that looked like it would drop for another RBI base hit, but Ryan Gerety's diving grab ended the inning and held Campbell to just the one run.
  • The Campell offense roared to life in the bottom of the fourth inning, plating nine runs on five hits, including a grand slam and a solo home run, two hit-by-pitches, and a walk, to retake the lead, 11-6.
  • Northeastern started clawing back in the sixth with a two-run inning. Bozzo once again led off with a single, and ran to third on a hard-hit error by DiGiorgio that skipped under the glove of Campbell's first baseman.
  • Bozzo would score on an RBI ground out by Musacchia, and DiGiorgio scored from second on an RBI single to left by Maldonado, cutting the deficit down to three runs.
  • Campbell put the game back out of reach when the Camels tacked those two runs back on and then some, with an RBI double and a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. The four-run inning made it 15-8.
  • Campbell tallied runs number 16 and 17 in the seventh inning, after a walk and an error set up a two-RBI double. The Camels led by nine after seven innings, and pair of base hits sandwiching a walk in the eighth gave Campbell the run-rule victory.
  • Feinberg's grand slam was his first of the season, and Northeastern's third.
  • The Husky defense, which came into the weekend allowing just 3.8 runs per game, allowed a season-high 18 on the afternoon. Northeastern has allowed 10 or more runs just four times this season.
  • Northeastern was on a nine-game winning streak, the program's longest since the 2023 season.

The Huskies return to New England for nine straight games, starting with a road contest at Central Connecticut State this Wednesday, April 9th at 3 p.m.
