MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Trailing by as many as four runs in the first five innings, No. 19 Northeastern (48-9) pulled out a heroic eighth-inning rally to win the 2025 CAA Tournament Championship over UNCW (34-24), winning by a final score of 9-6 at Patriots Point on Saturday evening.
The Huskies were down 6-3 in the eighth inning when a pair of singles by
Jack Doyle and
Ryan Gerety led off the inning, followed by a walk to
Cam Maldonado to load the bases with no outs.
Harrison Feinberg, who was named the Tournament MVP, laced a double into right-center field, scoring all three runners to tie the game at 6-6. The Huskies would then take the lead on a two-RBI double by
Carmelo Musacchia, and would get a huge one-inning save from
Brett Dunham, his second of the tournament, to clinch Northeastern's first tournament championship since 2021.
- For the first time in the tournament, the Huskies fell behind with a three-run Seahawk second inning – a double, walk, and homer gave UNCW a 3-0 lead.
- The Huskies answered back in the fourth, with a leadoff solo shot by Harrison Feinberg, clearing the left field wall to cut into the UNCW lead, 3-1.
- With two outs in the fifth, UNCW extended its lead with a two-run homer to lead 5-1.
- Northeastern cut the lead down to two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, after a Cam Maldonado double and a Harrison Feinberg homer, his second of the game and fourth of the tournament, to make it 5-3.
- UNCW answered the homer with a solo shot of their own in the top of the seventh to regain a three-run lead at 6-3.
- The eighth inning began with the singles by Doyle and Gerety, and a walk to Cam Maldonado, before Feinberg's bases-clearing double. His two homers six RBIs on the night (four and nine in the tournament) earned him the mantle of Tournament MVP.
- After Jack Goodman reached on a fielding error, he and Feinberg would score on a go-ahead RBI double to left-center by Musacchia to make it 8-6.
- Musacchia would take third on a balk, and score on a sac-fly by Matt Brinker to earn another insurance run, 9-6.
- Northeastern held UNCW to just three runs early, and kept the game within striking distance until that eighth inning. Aiven Cabral (4.2, 5H, 4R, 4K) got the start, while Jack Bowery (3.1, 3H, 2R, 2K) got the win in relief.
- Making his second appearance in the tournament was Brett Dunham, who worked a three-out save with just one hit on his line, and two punch outs, for his second straight game of the tournament with a save.
- Dunham earned All-Tournament Team honors, along with Friday's starter Jordan Gottesman, second baseman Carmelo Musacchia (5 hits, 2 homers, 6 RBIs), and right fielder Ryan Gerety (7 hits, 4 runs).
- It was just the second win of the season for Northeastern when trailing after seven innings - the Huskies tallied 13 runs in the eighth inning across two games with UNCW.
The Huskies will appear in their 11
th NCAA Tournament in program history, and await their placement in the tournament which will be announced Monday, May 26
th at 12 p.m. on ESPN2.
