TALLAHASSEE, Fla – Riding a 27-game win streak into the 2025 NCAA Tournament, No. 19 Northeastern (48-10), the two seed in the Tallahassee Regional, suffered its first loss since April 6
th, falling to the three seed, Mississippi State (35-21) by a score of 11-2 on Friday evening at Dick Howser Stadium.
- Northeastern struck first in the opening frame after a walk to Cam Maldonado, an infield single to Jack Goodman, and an RBI single up the middle by Carmelo Musacchia, scoring Maldonado for the 1-0 lead.
- The Bulldogs answered back in the top of the second on an infield double and a single to right to lead 3-1.
- In the bottom of the inning, Northeastern once again got some traffic on the basepaths on a walk to Will Fosberg and an infield single to Jack Doyle, and a line drive up the middle by Cam Maldonado bounced off the heel of a glove to allow Fosberg to score from third.
- MSU hung four in the top of the third on an RBI ground-out, RBI double, and a two-run homer to left to lead 7-2.
- After both defenses settled in for the middle innings, the Bulldogs got back to back two-out doubles in the top of the eighth to lead 8-2.
- MSU tacked on three more in the ninth on a two-run homer and an RBI ground-out for the 11-2 lead.
- Starting pitcher Will Jones suffered his first loss of the year after exiting in the third inning – reliever Jack Bowery worked an extended relief outing of 5.2 innings, striking out four while allowing four runs on six hits. He put up four straight scoreless innings from the fourth to the seventh innings.
- It's Northeastern first loss of the season when scoring in the first inning (25-1) and fourth loss of the season when scoring first (41-4).
The Huskies will play the regional four seed Bethune-Cookman in Saturday's losers' bracket game. That game is now scheduled for 1 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
