TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Facing elimination in the 2025 NCAA Tallahassee Regional, No. 19 Northeastern (49-10) got a late home run from catcher
Gregory Bozzo to retake the lead for good in the top of the ninth, eliminating Bethune-Cookman (37-23) with a 4-3 win at Dick Howser Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
A back-and-forth contest saw BCU tie the game up twice after Northeastern grabbed three separate leads in the first, sixth, and finally ninth innings. A trio of Northeastern pitchers combined to hold the Wildcats to just three runs on seven hits, striking out 12 batters on the afternoon. Starter
Jordan Gottesman went five strong innings allowing just one run on five hits with six punch outs. He handed the ball off to
Charlie Walker (W, 4-0) who struck out five, and
Brett Dunham (SV, 6) shut the door in the ninth.
- The Huskies tallied a run in the first for the second straight game, after a leadoff double by Ryan Gerety started off the inning. Gerety took third on a failed pickoff, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Harrison Feinberg for the 1-0 Northeastern lead.
- Bethune-Cookman scattered five hits through the first five innings, and was finally able to spoil the shutout in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double to tie it at 1-1.
- Northeastern answered back with an RBI single from Jack Goodman to retake the lead, 2-1. Goodman scored Feinberg, who kicked the inning off with a one-out double to left-center.
- A pair of leadoff base hits and a sacrifice fly netted the Wildcats their second tie of the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth.
- With two outs in the top of the ninth, Gregory Bozzo sent a 0-2 count over the left-center fence for his first homer of the season, retaking the lead for Northeastern at 3-2.
- A pop up by Ryan Gerety got away from the reach of all the infielders, allowing him to reach first on an RBI single, scoring Jack Doyle from second for the 4-2 lead.
- An error in the infield allowed a Wildcats run to come in and score, but a strikeout and ground out to closer Brett Dunham were able to secure the victory for Northeastern, 4-3.
- Charlie Walker earned his fourth relief win of the season, working three innings allowing just one run on two hits. He struck out five, including a huge strikeout to end his eighth inning, stranding the go-ahead run on second.
- Northeastern earns its first NCAA Regional win since the format swapped in 1999. The Huskies' last regional win came in the 1973 Fenway Park Regional, where the Huskies took down Providence 3-2 before dropping out of the winner's bracket with a loss to Harvard.
- It's NU's first win in the NCAA Tournament overall since 1997, when the Huskies swept a play-in series at Friedman Diamond to advance to the West Regional. That series was a two-game sweep over Bethune-Cookman, the first two meetings between the two programs all-time.
Northeastern will play again on Sunday, June 1
st against the loser of Saturday night's game between the top seed in the regional, No. 6 Florida State, and Northeastern's first round opponent, third seed Mississippi St.
