BROOKLINE, Mass. -- The Northeastern Huskies (37-9, 19-2 CAA) blanked the Delaware Blue Hens (25-21, 10-11 CAA) by a score of 10-0 in seven innings on Sunday afternoon, completing a weekend sweep at Friedman Diamond.
Graduate student
Jordan Gottesman delivered another shutout performance, going the distance in the run-rule shortened seven-inning contest, with five strikeouts while scattering five hits. The Huskies offense recorded 11 hits including a home run from
Matt Brinker, and a 3-for-4 day from
Alex Lane with two RBIs, hanging crooked in both the second and seventh innings.
- Northeastern grabbed the lead in the second inning, when Alex Lane drove in Will Fosberg from third with a groundout to second base for the 1-0 advantage.
- Justin Bosland and Matt Brinker followed with good baserunning, with Chris Walsh reaching on a bunt single, moving Brinker to third and Bosland to second, but an error by the pitcher allowed Brinker to score from third. Ryan Gerety added another run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Bosland to make it 3-0.
- The Huskies tacked on an unearned run in the fourth after Alex Lane doubled down the left field line and later scored on a passed ball, pushing the lead to 4-0.
- Northeastern extended their lead in the fifth when Matt Brinker launched a two-run home run to left field, scoring Carmelo Musacchia who had doubled earlier in the inning, extending the lead to 6-0.
- The Huskies put the game away in the seventh with four more runs on four hits. Lane delivered an RBI single, Bosland was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in a run, Gerety followed with an RBI walk, and Maldonado capped the scoring with an RBI single to right field that ended the game, scoring Lane.
- Gottesman was dominant on the mound, needing just 81 pitches to complete his second complete game shutout of the season. He didn't issue a walk while scattering five hits and striking out five Delaware batters.
- It's Gottesman's sixth straight start going six or more innings, and his third start in his last six where he's allowed no runs.
- On the basepaths, Chris Walsh notched his first two stolen bases of the season, as the Huskies totaled four on the day. Harrison Feinberg and Alex Lane grabbed the other two.
- Matt Brinker delivered his fourth home run of the season, accounting for two RBIs while drawing two walks and scoring three runs on the day.
- The shutout was Northeastern's 14th of the season, extending their NCAA lead in that category and further building on their program record.
- With the victory, the Huskies push their winning streak to 16 consecutive games, the second-longest winning streak in program history. It also marked the team's sixth run-rule victory this season and fifth in conference play.
- With the weekend's results, the Huskies have clinched a CAA Tournament Berth, with a six-game lead atop the conference standings.
The Huskies will next host UMass Lowell on Wednesday, May 7th at Friedman Diamond, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. on NESN and FloCollege.
