Lane, Walker Deliver Late Heroics In 1-0 Win At William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- In a pitcher's duel at Plumeri Park, the Northeastern Huskies (39-9, 20-2 CAA) secured the CAA regular season Championship with a 1-0 victory over the William & Mary Tribe (20-29, 13-9 CAA) on Friday evening.

Starting pitcher Will Jones and reliever Charlie Walker combined for Northeastern's 15th shutout of the season, scattering just four hits while striking out 11 Tribe batters in the series opener. The game remained scoreless until the ninth inning when Alex Lane delivered the game's only run with a clutch two-out RBI single, scoring Jack Goodman.
  • After eight scoreless innings, Northeastern broke through in the top of the ninth when Jack Goodman led off with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
  • Following a strikeout, Alex Lane drove in the game's only run with a single through the left side, bringing home Goodman for the 1-0 lead.
  • Will Jones delivered another dominant start for the Huskies, working 6.2 shutout innings while allowing just two hits and no walks. He struck out seven Tribe batters before handing the ball to Charlie Walker.
  • Walker earned his third win of the season (3-0), throwing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief. He allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four, including a key strikeout to start the bottom of the ninth.
  • William & Mary threatened in the final frame, loading the bases with two outs. Walker induced a fly out to right field from a pinch-hitter to secure the win.
  • It's the third shutout of the season for the duo of Jones and Walker, with the other two coming against Harvard (March 14th) and Charleston (April 18th).
  • The Huskies collected seven hits in the contest, with Alex Lane driving in the game's only run. Carmelo Musacchia also added a single, continuing his strong performance at the plate.
  • Jack Goodman reached base twice with a single and a walk, and his stolen base in the sixth inning marked one of the few scoring threats before the ninth.
  • The shutout victory extends Northeastern's nation-leading total to 15 on the season, as the Huskies continue their dominance in CAA play with a 20-2 conference record.
  • It was the lowest scoring game of the season, with the Huskies playing in a pair of three-run games (3-0 wins against BC and UConn) before tonight.
  • It's Northeastern's first CAA regular season championship and outright #1 seed in the CAA Tournament since 2021. Northeastern has now tallied 20 conference wins in three of the last five seasons.
The series continues on Saturday afternoon with game two scheduled for 1 p.m. at Plumeri Park. The game will be streamed on FloCollege.
