FAIRFIELD, Conn. – In four incredibly close sets, the Northeastern women's volleyball team (4-3) fell to the Fairfield Stags (5-2) in four sets at Mahoney Arena on Friday evening.
Fairfield def. Northeastern: 25-20, 25-20, 26-28, 25-22
- Set One: Both teams set the tone in the first set, trading points to a 13-12 Fairfield advantage, after a three-point run on services from Beatrice Gennari, including a service ace, tied the set at 10-10. The Stags pulled away after that point, with the Huskies cutting the lead down to four on a block by Svenja Rodenbeusch and Kaylin Daniels, before a 25-20 Fairfield final.
- Set Two: A similar set to the first, the two teams found themselves knotted at 15-15 after a five-point run which included a service ace from Rodenbeusch. Fairfield was once again able to pull away for a 25-20 set victory.
- Set Three: Northeastern came out firing in the third to the tune of a 9-4 lead to open the set, riding six straight points after a 3-4 deficit. The Stags rallied back to force the win-by-two rule, but an emphatic block from Gennari and Rodenbeusch secured the set win, 28-26.
- Set Four: The Huskies took control of the set, never trailing until the 20s after a 21-18 lead on a kill from Valentina Meirelles. The Stags then tallied eight unanswered, to finish the game in the fourth set, 25-22.
- Gennari led all hitters with a .579 hitting percentage, and all blockers with 6.0 along with Daniels. Gennari added a team-high 12 kills and two service aces.
- Northeastern tallied seven aces to Fairfield's three.
The Huskies continue their weekend road trip in Connecticut on Saturday night, September 13
