BOSTON – William Kermoury had a career-high 28 points, and the Northeastern men's basketball team (5-11, 1-4) brought a 22-point second half deficit all the way down to five points with less than two minutes remaining, but could not complete the comeback as Towson (9-9, 1-4) held on for an 87-78 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Cabot Center.
Kermoury scored 14 points in each half and finished 9-of-16 overall and 5-of-10 from distance to lead three Huskies in double figures. He was joined by 10 points apiece from
JB Frankel and
Ryan Williams as Northeastern, already playing shorthanded with three opening night starters out for the season, lost both
Youri Fritz and
Ty Francis to injuries in the first half.
Northeastern shot 44% as a team and 8-of-26 from distance in the contest, and used runs of 11-0 and 9-0 to chip away throughout the second half to make it a game in the final minutes. It was Towson's day, though, as the Tigers shot 61% overall and 50% from three, led by 22 points from Dylan Williamson as one of four Tigers to reach double figures.
The Huskies started red hot, hitting six of their first seven shots of the day and leading 14-2 just five minutes into the game. Kermoury couldn't be stopped, going for 14 points on 5-of-6 overall (3-of-4 from deep) to lead all scorers as Northeastern shot 48% as a team.
Towson would weather the storm, though, and went on a 22-5 run over the next nine minutes to overtake the lead and closed on a 7-0 run to take a 42-32 lead into the break. Williamson paced the Tigers with 12 points as Towson shot 60% from the floor.
The Tigers led by as many as 22 in the second half, shooting 62% from the floor in the half before the Huskies surged down the stretch in the final minutes.
An 11-0 Northeastern run over less than two minutes, with five points from
Haris Elezovic and four from Williams, brought the Huskies within 11 midway through the half. NU would follow it up with a 9-0 run to make it 79-73 Towson with two minutes to play before the Tigers iced the game at the free throw line.
The Huskies will be back in action on Thursday when Northeastern hosts Elon at the Cabot Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on NESN+ and FloCollege.
