BOSTON — The Northeastern men's hockey team completed a weekend sweep of New Hampshire with a 5-2 victory on Saturday night at Walter Brown Arena, powered by four players recording two-point performances.
Â
Northeastern broke through at 11:08 of the opening frame after sophomore
Griffin Erdman intercepted a pass and created a scoring chance with two quick shots. Freshman
Matthew Maltais was in perfect position to bury the rebound for his first collegiate goal.
Â
New Hampshire answered back to even the score as Jacob Newcombe finished off an unassisted effort to make it a 1-1 game.
Â
Northeastern reclaimed the lead before the first intermission when junior
Dylan Hryckowian netted his third goal in as many games. Work in the neutral zone from freshmen
Jacob Mathieu and
Giacomo Martino freed Hryckowian as he took the puck to the net and snuck it past the goaltender while being tripped up in the crease.
Â
Northeastern opened the second period with two goals in a 14-second span, starting with junior
Tyler Fukakusa's tape-to-tape pass that set up junior
Eli Sebastian for an easy redirect. Sebastian's first goal of the season gave the Huskies a 3-1 advantage, with freshman
Jack Pechar also credited with an assist.
Â
Northeastern continued its second-period surge as sophomore
Griffin Erdman crashed the net, gathered his own rebound, and buried his second goal of the weekend. The strike, assisted by freshmen
Matthew Maltais and
Dylan Compton, pushed the Huskies' advantage to 4-1.
Â
Before the period closed, UNH's Cy LeClerc found the back of the net to cut Northeastern's lead in half, making it a 4-2 game heading into the final frame.
Â
With no action early in the third period, Martino capitalized on a hustle play to score an empty-net goal, assisted by Hryckowian, and seal the 5-2 victory for the Huskies.
Â
For his tenth win of the season, netminder
Lawton Zacher made 30 saves in a complete 60-minute game.
Â
Northeastern faces a quick turnaround as the Huskies head to North Andover for a road series at Merrimack this Thursday (Jan. 22) and Friday (Jan. 23). Both games at Lawler Rink are set for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
