Hofstra made one final push, cutting the deficit to 57-55 on a Sterling three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining and again to 60-57 after Nevaeh Brown's two free throws with five seconds left. But Tramble calmly sank both ends of a one-and-one with four seconds remaining to seal the two-point victory.
Free throw shooting proved to be the difference as Northeastern converted 21-of-24 attempts (87.5 percent), including a blistering 16-of-17 clip (94.1 percent) in the fourth quarter. Hofstra shot just 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) from the line.
Sterling led all scorers with 20 points for Hofstra but fouled out in the final minute. Alarice Gooden added 14 points and Sandra Magolico recorded a double-double with six points and 12 rebounds for the Pride, who fall to 3-14 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
