BOSTON -- Yirsy Quéliz scored a team-high 10 points and Alyssa Staten pulled down eight rebounds off the bench, but the Northeastern women's basketball team (6-11, 2-5) fell to the William & Mary Tribe 63-50 (9-8, 2-4 CAA) at the Cabot Center on Thursday evening.
Along with Quéliz and Staten, Justice Tramble added seven rebounds to go with eight points, while Maya Summerville chipped in with five points and a team-high three steals.
The Huskies started strong, building a 10-5 lead midway through the first quarter behind a three-pointer from Nariyah Simmons and a putback from Alyssa Staten. William & Mary responded with a 10-0 run to close the period, taking a 15-12 advantage into the second.
Northeastern continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 33-23 halftime deficit. The Huskies shot 40.9 percent from the field in the opening half but struggled to take care of the ball, committing 13 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
William & Mary continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 38-25 advantage before Northeastern went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a fast-break layup from Kailee Beaudion-Foliaki, to trim its deficit to 38-30 with 4:40 to go in the third. The Tribe countered and stretched its lead to 49-38 heading into the fourth.
Northeastern knocked down just one three-pointer in the quarter, from Nariyah Simmons, as part of its 15 third-quarter points.
William & Mary built its largest lead of 17 points at 59-42 with 3:54 remaining in the fourth quarter before Northeastern went on a late 8-4 run. The Huskies could not pull any closer, losing by a final of 63-50. Northeastern took advantage of its opportunities in the paint, scoring 28 of its 50 points inside.
Northeastern committed 21 turnovers in Thursday's contest, which William & Mary converted into 20 points on the offensive end. The Tribe's Cassidy Geddes was a thorn in the Huskies' side all night, finishing with a game-high 20 points and four steals.
Due to the forecast on the east coast, the Huskies' next contest with Monmouth originally scheduled for January 25th in West Long Branch, N.J. has been postponed. A make-up date is currently TBD.
