BOSTON – William Kermoury went for a career-high 36 points as the Northeastern men's basketball team (6-15, 2-8) went toe-to-toe against one of the top teams in the CAA, but a late 9-0 run from the College of Charleston run gave the Cougars (15-8, 8-2) the narrow victory in front of a sold out Cabot Center crowd on Saturday afternoon, 89-84.
Â
In a game that saw nine ties and 17 lead changes, including six and 13 respectively in the second half, it was the Cougars who had the last laugh with a 9-0 run from Jlynn Counter (28 points) over two minutes late in regulation to send Charleston to the win.
Â
Kermoury went over 30 points for the second time this season, finishing with the most points in a game for a Husky since Tyson Walker in 2021 and tied for the 13th most in Northeastern single-game history. The Stockholm native finished 15-of-27 from the field, tied for the fourth most made field goals in a game and the most since Jordan Roland in 2019. Kermoury was also 6-of-14 from long range, making at least six threes in a game for the fifth time this season.
Â
Kermoury was supported by 24 points from junior
Mike Loughnane on 11-of-16 shooting, with the duo each playing the full 40 minutes in the game.
Luca Soroa Schaller, meanwhile, recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds, along with six assists for a Northeastern squad that finished 49% overall (36-of-73), the most makes for the team since 2019.
Â
Counter led three Cougars in double figures on the day as Charleston shot 53% overall (33-of-62), including a 58-44 edge in the paint.
Â
The Huskies had the crowd going early, going 18-of-37 from the floor to lead by as many as eight before taking a 40-38 lead into the locker room.
Â
Kermoury was the story for Northeastern, going for 19 points on 8-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-9 from distance to lead the charge. Loughnane chipped in with 11, while Soroa Schaller had six points, 10 rebounds and three assists as NU used an 18-7 run over more than seven minutes of action to control the game early.
Â
Charleston, meanwhile, used a balanced scoring attack and an 11-4 run late in the half to climb within two at recess, shooting 14-of-29 from the field.
Â
The teams went punch for punch throughout the second half, with neither squad leading by more than five points until the final three minutes of the game. Kermoury continued to deliver for Northeastern, going for another 17 in the final 20 minutes while Loughnane was right with him, adding 13 of his own.
Â
After Charleston knotted the game at 46 less than three minutes into the second half, the teams traded buckets over the next 15 minutes as the game stayed within a possession. The Huskies shot 50% from the field topped only by Charleston's 57%, including 36 points in the paint.
Â
But Counter would go on a 9-0 run of his own, with five points coming at the stripe, to put the Cougars up for good in the final minute of the game despite a corner three from
Xavier Abreu (seven points) that cut the deficit late.
Â
The Huskies will hit the road for two games on Long Island next week, beginning at Hofstra on Thursday at 7 p.m.
