CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Northeastern women's basketball team (4-8, 0-2 CAA) fell to preseason CAA favorite Charleston (10-3, 2-0 CAA), 85-58, at TD Arena on Sunday afternoon to wrap up a two-game weekend road trip.
The Huskies' lone scorer in double figures was Kailee Beaudion-Foliaki, who posted 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Taylor Holohan added nine points and grabbed five rebounds, while Camryn Collins chipped in eight points. Justice Tramble recorded six points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, her second game in the last three with double-digit boards.
Northeastern struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Huskies battled back in the second period, outscoring Charleston 20-18 to trim the deficit to 39-30 at halftime. The Cougars seized control in the third quarter, building their lead to 67-44 entering the final frame.
Charleston was powered by reigning CAA Player of the Year Taryn Barbot, who poured in a game-high 29 points while connecting on 8-of-11 from three-point range. Tyja Beans added 23 points for the Cougars, who improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
The Huskies shot just 37.1 percent from the field (23-of-62) and struggled from beyond the arc, making only 4-of-12 three-point attempts (33.3 percent). Northeastern was outrebounded 45-37 but did convert 13 Charleston turnovers into 31 points.
Northeastern had success in the paint, scoring 34 points in that area, and capitalized on second-chance opportunities with 15 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds. The bench contributed 21 points, led by Morgan Matthews' seven points in over 15 minutes of action.
The Huskies shot 80 percent from the free-throw line, making 8-of-10 attempts, but were unable to overcome Charleston's hot shooting from long range. The Cougars knocked down 12-of-27 three-pointers (44.4 percent) and shot 45.2 percent from the field overall.
The loss drops Northeastern to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in CAA play as the Huskies return home for their next contest. Northeastern will host North Carolina A&T on Friday, January 9 at 7 p.m. at the Cabot Center. Tickets are available at NUHuskies.com/tickets.
