PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Four skaters recorded two-point nights as the Northeastern men's hockey team upset No. 7/6 Providence, 4-2, on Friday night.
Providence opened the scoring just under nine minutes into the first period for a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies responded with two goals less than one minute apart. Northeastern tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play strike from freshman
Giacomo Martino, who ripped a shot from the top of the left circle following crisp puck movement from junior
Tyler Fukakusa and freshman
Amine Hajibi.
Just 52 seconds later, sophomore
Joe Connor gave NU a 2-1 advantage heading into the first intermission. Freshman
Dylan Compton made a strong defensive read, intercepting a Friars pass attempt that sprung Connor on a breakaway for his backhand tally.
The Friars scored the second period's lone goal to knot the game at 2-2 heading into the final frame.
Northeastern struck again on the power play, this time with freshman
Jacob Mathieu finding the back of the net. Once again, strong puck protection from Fukakusa and Hajibi created an opening in the slot for Mathieu's redirect.
With under a minute to play, Mathieu added his second goal of the evening to seal the Huskies' 4-2 victory, with the assist going to Martino for his second point of the night.
Goaltender
Lawton Zacher collected his sixth win over a ranked opponent this season, finishing with 24 saves.
Northeastern returns to Schneider Arena tomorrow night to close out their weekend series against No. 7/6 Providence with puck drop slated for 5:30 p.m.
