BOSTON, Mass. -- Morgan Matthews scored a team-high 11 points and
María Sánchez Pitarch added a career-high nine off the bench, but a 17-0 Charleston run in the third quarter proved to be the difference as the Northeastern women's basketball team (6-16, 2-10 CAA) fell to the College of Charleston Cougars (20-3, 12-0 CAA), 69-47, on Friday night at Cabot Center.
The Huskies had two players come off the bench to lead the scoring effort, with Matthews finishing with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting in 31 minutes and Sánchez Pitarch chipping in with nine points, an assist and a steal in 29 minutes.
Camryn Collins also added nine points and two assists for Northeastern from the starting lineup.
Northeastern's bench outscored its starters in the scoring column, combining for 24 of the team's 47 points.
Justice Tramble led the Huskies on the glass with nine rebounds, including six on the offensive end.
The Northeastern defense held Charleston to 35.3 percent shooting in the first quarter, but the Cougars heated up in the second half, shooting 54.8 percent from the field over the final two periods.
Northeastern kept things close out of the gate, trailing just 16-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Morgan Matthews knocked down a three-pointer with 12 seconds remaining in the period to trim the deficit to two.
The Huskies and Cougars traded blows in a low-scoring second quarter, with María Sánchez Pitarch converting a pair of free throws to knot the score at 23-23 with 1:30 to go in the half. Charleston's Jami Hill hit a buzzer-beating fast-break three to give the Cougars a 26-23 lead heading into halftime.
Northeastern grabbed its first lead of the game early in the third quarter when
Nariyah Simmons drilled a three-pointer to put the Huskies ahead 28-26.
Camryn Collins followed with a fast-break layup to extend the advantage to 30-26, Northeastern's largest lead of the night.
Charleston responded with a decisive 17-0 run, fueled by 12 points off turnovers, to seize a 43-30 lead with 3:00 remaining in the third. The Cougars outscored Northeastern 23-9 in the period to take a commanding 49-32 lead into the fourth.
Northeastern could not pull any closer in the fourth, falling by a final score of 69-47. The Huskies committed 18 turnovers on the night, which Charleston converted into 21 points. The Cougars also held a 20-0 advantage in second-chance points.
Charleston was led by Taryn Barbot, who finished with a game-high 22 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while Grace Ezebilo recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
