STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Yirsy Quéliz scored a team-high 13 points, but the Northeastern women's basketball team fell to the Stony Brook Seawolves 64-55 on Friday night at Stony Brook Arena despite a 26-point third quarter surge to erase a massive halftime deficit.
The Huskies had three players score in double figures, led by Quéliz's 13 points, which she paired with two assists and five steals. Tramble notched her third double-digit scoring performance in the last five games with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Camryn Collins chipped in with 12 points and a steal, adding a late three to keep the Huskies in the fight.
Northeastern struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Huskies continued to lose ground in the second quarter, managing just six points on 2-of-12 shooting and faced a 36-17 halftime deficit.
The third quarter belonged to Northeastern. The Huskies exploded for 26 points, shooting 60 percent from the field, and went on a 9-0 run to trim the deficit to 39-30. Tramble was particularly effective in the period, scoring eight points on perfect 4-of-4 shooting. Northeastern took advantage of its opportunities in the paint, scoring 24 of its 26 third-quarter points inside.
Despite the strong third-quarter push, Northeastern could not complete the comeback in the fourth. The Huskies cut the lead to 59-50 early in the quarter on a Collins three-pointer but could get no closer. Quéliz knocked down a three-pointer with 1:12 remaining to make it 62-54, but Stony Brook hit free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Northeastern was led by Quéliz's five steals, part of a strong defensive effort that forced 23 Stony Brook turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the offensive end. The Huskies also dominated the paint in the second half, outscoring the Seawolves 28-8 after intermission and finishing with 36 paint points for the game.
Up next, the Huskies travel to Towson on Sunday, February 8 at 1 p.m.
