TOWSON, Md. -- Yirsy Quéliz scored 16 points to once again lead the team in scoring, but the Northeastern women's basketball team (6-15, 2-9 CAA) fell to the Towson Tigers (13-10, 6-4 CAA) 63-55 on Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena.
The Huskies had three players score in double figures, led by Quéliz, who had 16 points, two assists and two steals. Morgan Matthews chipped in with 10 points and two steals, while Justice Tramble added 12 points and four rebounds. Tramble shot an efficient 5-of-10 from the field in her 23 minutes of action.
Northeastern had another slow start, but trailed by just two, 11-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Huskies continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 29-20 halftime deficit. Towson built its largest lead of the game at 46-30 midway through the third quarter before Northeastern fought back. The Huskies went on a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter, punctuated by a three-pointer from Quéliz, to trim the deficit to 52-43 with 5:47 remaining. Towson responded to maintain its advantage and held on for the 63-55 victory.
Northeastern knocked down four three-pointers in the game, with Quéliz hitting three of those triples. The Huskies shot 34.5% from the field for the game but improved to 50% in the fourth quarter, making 7-of-14 attempts as they mounted their comeback attempt.
Towson was led by Viki Matulevicius, who scored 14 points off the bench and hit two three-pointers. India Johnston added 11 points for the Tigers, while Masyn Marchbanks contributed 11 points as well.
The Northeastern defense forced 11 Towson turnovers, converting those mistakes into six points on the offensive end. The Huskies also scored 22 points in the paint but were outscored 26-22 in that category.
