BROOKLINE, Mass. --
Ryan Griffin allowed just one earned run over 6.2 innings and
Matt Brinker hammered a solo home run to lead the Northeastern Huskies (9-7, 5-1 CAA) to a 3-2 series-sweeping victory over the Towson Tigers (6-10, 0-6 CAA) on Sunday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Â
The Huskies took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, and after Towson pulled within one in the fifth, Brinker answered immediately with a leadoff homer to restore the two-run cushion. The bullpen tandem of
Matthew Sapienza and
Andrew Rogovic finished the job, combining for 2.1 scoreless innings to close it out — marking the third straight save of the series for the Husky relief corps.
Â
- Northeastern broke through in the second after Eric Cha battled through a 10-pitch at-bat before getting hit by a pitch. Cooper Tarantino singled up the middle to move Cha to third, then stole second to put both runners in scoring position. Chris Walsh came through with a two-out single through the left side to plate both runners for the 2-0 lead.
- Towson cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth on an RBI groundout that scored a runner who had reached on a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt, and moved up on a wild pitch.
- Brinker responded immediately, turning on the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth and sending it to left field for a solo homer — his second of the season — to push the lead back to 3-1 and chase the Towson starter.
- Towson got an unearned run in the seventh after a pair of Northeastern errors — a pickoff throw that sailed into the outfield and a throwing error on a ground ball — allowed a run to score without a hit. Sapienza entered and picked off the runner at second to end the threat, keeping the lead at 3-2.
- Griffin earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the season, working 6.2 innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits. He walked three and struck out three, but was dominant on the ground — his 11 ground ball outs against just four fly ball outs kept the Tigers from putting the ball in the air all afternoon.
- Sapienza worked 1.1 scoreless innings in middle relief, retiring all three batters he faced, while Rogovic slammed the door in the ninth for his second save, allowing just a single before closing it out with a strikeout and a fielder's choice.
- Gerety led the Huskies at the plate with a 3-for-4 afternoon, singling three times and swiping a base. Tarantino went 2-for-3 with a single and a stolen base, while Walsh drove in both runs in the second on his two-out single.
- All three wins in the series featured a save — Andrew Basel earned one on Friday, Andrew Wertz picked up his first as a Husky on Saturday, and Andrew Rogovic closed it out on Sunday. The Husky bullpen allowed no runs in 9.1 combined innings across the three games. Northeastern is now 9-0 on the year when leading after six innings.
- The sweep extends Northeastern's home winning streak at Friedman Diamond to 22 games, dating back to the 2025 season, continuing a dominant run at home. The Huskies went 23-1 at home last year en route to the CAA Regular Season Championship.
Â
Northeastern plays four games of its five games this week at home, starting with Tuesday afternoon's match up with Merrimack. That game is set for a 2:30 p.m. start on FloCollege.
