STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Despite a four-RBI afternoon from Matt Brinker, the Northeastern Huskies (5-7, 2-1 CAA) fell 7-6 to Stony Brook (2-11, 1-2 CAA) on a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field, as the Seawolves spoiled the Huskies' bid for a series sweep.
Northeastern overcame an early deficit with a three-run seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead, but Stony Brook answered with three of its own in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead. The Huskies fought back to tie it in the ninth on an RBI single from Brinker, but a solo home run in the bottom gave the Seawolves the walk-off win.
- Northeastern struck first in the opening inning after Ryan Gerety worked a full-count walk, moved to second on a throwing error by the pitcher, and scored on a Brinker double to left center for the 1-0 lead.
- Stony Brook answered immediately with a solo homer down the right field line in the bottom of the first to tie it at 1-1.
- The Seawolves took the lead in the third on an RBI double down the right field line, and added another in the fifth on a sacrifice bunt that plated a run, pushing the lead to 3-1.
- Eric Cha pulled the Huskies within one in the sixth, launching a two-out solo homer to left field off a 2-2 count to make it 3-2.
- Northeastern took the lead with a three-run seventh inning. Cooper Tarantino started the rally with a single to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After an intentional walk to Harrison Feinberg, Gerety singled to right to plate Tarantino and tie it at 3-3. Brinker followed with a two-out double down the left field line, scoring both Gerety and Feinberg for the 5-3 lead.
- Stony Brook responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead 6-5. A solo homer, a run-scoring groundout, and a sacrifice fly brought in the three runs against three different Husky relievers.
- Down to their final three outs, the Huskies rallied in the ninth. Feinberg singled to third base, Gerety drew a walk to put two on, and Brinker singled to right to score Feinberg and tie the game at 6-6, his fourth RBI of the day.
- Brinker led the Huskies at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance, including two doubles, a single, and four RBIs. All three of his hits came with two outs and runners in scoring position.
- Feinberg reached base three times with a single and two walks, scoring two runs. Gerety also reached three times with a single and two walks, scoring twice and driving in a run.
- Tarantino had a two-hit day with a double and a single, and swiped a pair of bases on the afternoon.
- Starter Andrew Wertz worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk on 65 pitches. Joseph Hauser followed with a clean sixth, striking out two in his one inning of work.
- The loss snaps a 20-game CAA regular season winning streak for the Huskies, dating back to an April 6, 2025 loss at Campbell. Northeastern had won its final 18Â conference games of the 2025 regular season and the first two games of this series before the streak came to an end.
- Despite the loss, the Huskies still take the series 2-1 over the Seawolves after winning Friday's game and Saturday's 13-inning marathon. It's the 11th straight CAA series victory for the Huskies dating back to 2024, after never losing a CAA series in 2025.
The Huskies stay in the Northeast for a full week of action, with a midweek at Central Connecticut on Wednesday before the first series of the season at Friedman Diamond, when NU hosts Towson Friday through Sunday, March 13-15.
