STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- In a marathon that stretched across two days and 13 innings, the Northeastern Huskies (5-6, 2-0 CAA) held on to defeat Stony Brook 4-3 in a game that was suspended after 11 innings due to darkness on Saturday and resumed Sunday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field. Carter Bentley scored the go-ahead run on an AJ Aschettino sacrifice fly in the top of the 13th, and Ryan Griffin slammed the door with two perfect innings of relief to earn the win and clinch the series for Northeastern.
- Anthony Ruggiero got the Huskies on the board in the second with a solo home run to right field — his first career home run — to put Northeastern up 1-0.
- The Huskies extended the lead to 3-1 in the fourth when Eric Cha singled and AJ Aschettino walked, and a pair of wild pitches moved both runners up ninety feet each. Will Fosberg delivered a two-out, two-run single to center to plate both Cha and Aschettino.
- Luc Rising was dominant on the mound through six innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out nine batters. The Huskies carried that 3-1 lead through eight innings before Stony Brook tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on two runs to force extra innings.
- Northeastern loaded the bases in the 10th with no outs, putting Musacchia on second and Gerety and Bentley on with walks, but couldn't push across the go-ahead run.
- Andrew Rogovic kept the game tied with two scoreless innings of relief in the 10th and 11th — retiring all six batters he faced — before darkness halted play after 11 with the score knotted at 3.
- When play resumed Sunday morning, Griffin entered for the bottom of the 12th and retired Stony Brook in order. Northeastern then put together the game-winning rally in the 13th — Bentley was hit by a pitch, Ruggiero singled through the right side to put runners on first and second, and after Cha advanced Bentley to third on a fly out, Aschettino lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate the decisive run. Griffin worked around two outs in the bottom of the 13th to seal the 4-3 victory.
- Griffin finished the day facing the minimum through two with a pair of strikeouts in his second win in as many appearances.
- Ruggiero finished 2-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs. Fosberg went 1-for-5 with two RBIs, and Cha went 2-for-6 with a double. Aschettino drew two walks and drove in the winning run.
The series concludes Sunday, March 8th at Joe Nathan Field, with first pitch to follow the completion of Saturday's resumed game.
