CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Andrew Basel turned in a dominant five-inning start, the Huskies capitalized on Harvard's control troubles to score all four of their runs on just three hits, and Northeastern (17-14) advanced to the Baseball Beanpot Championship for the third straight season with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon at O'Donnell Field.
Basel held Harvard (5-17) to one run over five innings while striking out six, and a trio of relievers — Joseph Hauser, Andrew Wertz, and Matthew Sapienza — combined to retire the final 12 outs to secure the win. The Huskies will face Boston College next Tuesday in Brighton, looking to win their third consecutive Beanpot title.
- Northeastern put up three runs in the second inning without recording an extra-base hit, taking full advantage of free bases. Cooper Tarantino led off with a walk, moved to second on an AJ Aschettino hit-by-pitch, and both runners moved up on a ground out.
- Charlie Criscola followed with an RBI infield single to put the Huskies up 1-0, scoring Tarantino from third. With the bases loaded, Carmelo Musacchia singled through the left side with two outs to plate two more and push the lead to 3-0.
- The Huskies added an insurance run in the fourth when Ryan Gerety drew a walk, stole second and third in succession, and scored on an RBI single to shortstop by Harrison Feinberg for the 4-1 advantage.
- Basel was efficient and composed in his start, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six over five innings. He worked through a bases-loaded jam in the third — stranding three Harvard runners — and retired the side in order in the fifth to keep the Crimson at bay.
- Hauser worked two near-perfect innings in the sixth and seventh, stranding a runner in the seventh with a pair of strikeouts. Wertz followed with a scoreless eighth, inducing a double play to escape trouble, and Sapienza closed it out in the ninth, striking out one and getting two flyouts to secure the victory.
- Musacchia finished 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Feinberg went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Gerety reached base three times on two walks and a stolen base combination that manufactured the Huskies' fourth run.
- The Huskies drew five walks and were hit by five pitches in the contest, with Harvard's pitching staff cycling through seven arms. Northeastern made them pay at every opportunity, scoring each of their four runs via a walk or hit batsman reaching base earlier in the rally.
- The runnin' Huskies stole another seven bags on the day, led by Carmelo Musacchia with three, to put their season total at 118.
Northeastern advances to the Beanpot Championship for the third consecutive year and will face Boston College next Tuesday, April 14th, at Harrington Athletic Village. The Huskies return home this weekend for a four-game set, with two games each against Merrimack and Maine.
