Created by former Northeastern assistant coach Pete Hughes, the 19 Ways community service program challenges varsity teams to make an impact on their local communities in 19 different ways. Hughes named the program in honor of his late mother, Alice, whose favorite number was 19.
Northeastern baseball head coach Mike Glavine, who played under Hughes’ mentorship at NU between 1992 and 1995, brought the 19 Ways program to the Huskies at the start of the 2015-16 scholastic year.
“I am excited to have our program be a part of the 19 Ways community service program,” said Glavine upon starting the program at Northeastern. “Coach Hughes has been such a positive influence on my life since he coached me here at Northeastern. I wanted a way to thank him and what better way than to have our players be a part of 19 Ways and to honor Pete’s mother.”
Hughes, who is the current volunteer assistant coach at Georgia after previously serving as the head coach at Boston College, Virginia Tech, and Oklahoma, was proud to see the Huskies adopt his program.
“Northeastern University has a special place in my heart,” said Hughes. “It is where I started in this profession. The people [my wife and I] met there and what the university represents are the reasons why we chose to raise a family around a college atmosphere.
“I am honored that the spirit of 19 Ways, along with my mother’s memory and who she was, will be a part of Northeastern baseball and the surrounding community. Specifically, I am grateful and humbled for 19 Ways’ association with one of the finest coaches and role models in college baseball, Mike Glavine.”

Huskies Once Again Run for Liam
In support of their Team Impact match, Liam, the Northeastern baseball team dressed in its Halloween costumes and headed to Norwood, Massachusetts, on Sep. 25 to participate in the 11th annual Miles for Liam 5K Walk/Run, as hosted by Liam’s L.E.E.P.
All proceeds from the Miles for Liam 5K Walk/Run go to support Liam’s L.E.E.P., which assists families of children living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) - the most common genetic disorder that affects muscle development, mainly in boys, like Liam. To learn more, please click here. |

Huskies continue annual work at Journey Forward
James Quinlivan, Wyatt Scotti, Thomas Balboni, Brett Dunham, and Dennis Colleran volunteered at Journey Forward’s fall charity event, where they helped support those with spinal cord injuries and disabilities. This year marks the Huskies’ fifth consecutive during which Northeastern has been involved with Journey Forward as part of its 19 Ways initiative.
Journey Forward is a nonprofit organization based in Canton, Massachusetts, that assists its patients through an exercise-based rehabilitation program, helping them achieve the most basic of lifelong functions and benefits. To learn more, please visit journey-forward.org.

Northeastern Walks to End Alzheimer's
On Sept. 25, Greg Bozzo, Matt Downing, Teddy Beaudet, Jeff Costello, JP Olsen,Corey Diloreto, and Justin Bosland headed to Patriot Place in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where the Huskies participated in the 2021 Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The group completed the two-mile walking course alongside more than 1,000 participants, helping the event raise more than $440,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Northeastern holds sixth annual canned food drive for Rosie's Place
Furthering its connection with Rosie’s Place, the Northeastern baseball team held its fourth annual canned food drive in support of the women’s shelter, located in Boston. Together with their families, the Huskies were able to make a generous donation to the shelter.
Founded in 1974, Rosie’s Place was the first established women’s shelter in the United States and operates today with the mission to provide a safe and nurturing environment to all women, especially to those who are poor and homeless. To learn more, please visit rosiesplace.org
