Ben Horwarth joined the Northeastern field hockey program as an assistant coach on July 1, 2013. Howarth joins the staff after spending the 2012 season as the head coach at the University of Liverpool and the Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club.
"Ben is a great teacher of the game," said head coach Cheryl Murtagh. "As a player he was a goalkeeper, but more recently he coached women's teams at the University level in England. We are excited to add someone to our staff who has a great work ethic and has such a positive, energetic approach to coaching. Ben knows that we have high expectations for our team and he wants to see the trend continue, and to an even higher level."
While at the University of Liverpool, Howarth was responsible for all aspects of the program including the supervision and design of daily practices, team selections and tactical analysis. While at the helm, Howarth's team captured the Lancashire Hockey league championship was helped the team in its transition to North League Division 2a. He had similar responsibilities with Liverpool Sefton in addition to team travel team selection for the National league north conference team.
"I am thrilled to be joining the Northeastern field hockey family," Howarth said. "It is a very exciting time to be joining the Huskies with the incoming players, the recently developed facility in Dedham, and the chance to work alongside coaches of such experience and expertise. Everyone involved in the program is working hard to achieve something special here, and I'm looking forward to adding to the collective efforts."
Howarth, a 2012 graduate of the University of Durham, also served as the Ladies Second Team Coach at Durham during the 2011-12 season we he worked with the club to earn promotion to the University League. During his playing career, Howarth was a three-year goalkeeper with Durham.
