In a grueling battle for one of two final spots in the America East playoffs, the Northeastern women's soccer team was defeated 1-0 by the Towson Tigers Friday night at Sweeney Field. The Huskies' hopes for their first-ever playoff berth were shattered in the loss, while Towson's hopes were kept alive.
The highlight of the scoreless first half came just over 30 minutes into the action when Towson's Holly Noga snuck behind two NU defenders and sent a shot at Husky goalie Shellie Parkinson. Noga's sent her shot over the left shoulder of Parkinson, who managed to get her hand on the ball to make a great save. But Noga would strike again.
After a first half dominated by the Huskies, the second half saw many more opportunities for NU that they could not capitalize on. Over 55 minutes into the action, the Huskies had three great shots that all sailed wide.
In the 81st minute of play, Noga took Maggie Lennon's cross and chipped it past Parkinson to the back right of the net.
In the loss, NU falls to 10-6-1 overall and 4-4 in America East action, while Towson improves to 10-6-1 and 5-2-1 in conference play.
Next up for the Huskies is Delaware on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Sweeney Field in NU's final game of the year.
