BROOKLINE, MA - The Northeastern University women's soccer team outshot the Vermont Catamounts 31-4 and defeated its America East foe 3-0 on Friday night at Parsons Field.
Redshirt freshman Cynthia Slowik got her first career start in net for the Huskies and recorded 1 save in the shutout victory.
The lone goal of the first half came at the 43:26 mark as Kelly Smith blasted a shot to the back of the net past Vermont goalie Brooke Fairbanks. Jennifer North lofted the ball into a crowd of players and Michelle Carberry emerged with the ball and attempted a shot. Carberry's shot was deflected to Smith who recorded the goal. Carberry picked up the assist for the Huskies.
Prior to Smith's goal, the Huskies had a great opportunity with under 10 minutes remaining in the first frame of action. UVM keeper Fairbanks was forced out of the net trying to control a headed ball. The ball was knocked loose and Carberry came away with it. Carberry gathered and then fired at the empty net. Vermont's Megan Galbreath made an impressive defensive save to preserve the 0-0 tie for the time being.
At 53:47, Carberry picked up her second assist for the game as she sent NU's corner kick over several UVM defenders. Rebecca Viviani timed her jump perfectly and scored the Huskies' second goal of the evening. Just under seven minutes later the two almost hooked up for another corner kick-header combination, but Fairbanks made a great save on the headed attempt.
Northeastern's third goal came via nifty foot work by Lisa Norlin. Norlin managed to squeak by several Catamount defenders and blast a shot for the goal.
In the victory Northeastern improves to 7-4-4 on the season and 3-3-3 in America East action, while Vermont falls to 5-9-1 on the year and 4-5 in conference play.
Next up for NU is conference opponent Hartford on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.
