Northeastern hit four home runs, highlighted by Ben Beck's sixth-inning grand slam, as the Huskies defeated the host University of Hartford Hawks, 12-4, in game one of a key America East doubleheader at Ray McKenna Field.
Northeastern scored a run in the top of the first on an RBI groundout by Miguel Paquette, and NU added three more in the third on a Luke Carlin home run, an error, and a Colin Gaynor RBI single to take a 4-0 lead.
The Huskies would add four more in the fifth on two-run home runs by Erik Hagstrom and Jeff Heriot. Hartford answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the inning, all of them unearned. The first run came on a Keith Mirante RBI sacrifice fly, which drove in Cory Parker, who started the inning by reaching on Hagstrom's error. The next three runs came on a Matt Denorfia three-run home run with two outs, cutting the deficit to 8-4.
NU would push the lead back to eight on Beck's grand slam to provide the final margin. Ken Henry went the distance for the Huskies to pick up his team-leading fifth win of the season. He allowed only two hits while striking out seven. Jeff Swedberg took the loss for Hartford.
