Northeastern 5, Iona 0

Northeastern earned its first victory of the season with a 5-0 shutout over Iona at Mazzella Field on Thursday. Jess Pfeifer tallied two goals and Liz Dyjak added a goal and two assists in the victory for the Huskies. NU picked up its first win of the season and improves to 1-2-2.

Northeastern got on the board in the sixth minute as Tanya Mello scored on a crossing pass from Jennifer North. It was Mello's first goal in her comeback from a knee injury that kept her out of the entire 2001 season. North scored the Huskies' second goal a little over three minutes later for a 2-0 lead going into the half.

"We played a good first half, and we came out even stronger in the second half, which was very encouraging," commented Coach Ed Matz.

Pfeifer scored twice with in a span of 1:04, tallying the first goal at the 51:02 mark. Dyjak added a goal in the 74th minute to round out the goal scoring in the second half. Cynthia Slowik made four saves in net for NU, as the Huskies recorded their first shutout of the season.

The Huskies outshot Iona 30-5 and rebounded after being shut out in their last two games.

"We learned some good lessons over the weekend from teams (Memphis and Mississippi) that tend to play really fast," Matz said.

Northeastern will look to make it two in a row on Saturday, when they host Siena starting at 1 p.m. at Parsons Field.
