Northeastern won for the fifth time in its last six contests, with a 10-6 victory over Central Connecticut State on Tuesday afternoon. The win improves NU's record to 12-17 overall.
CCSU got on the board in the bottom half of the first inning by scoring a run without getting a hit off Northeastern starter Matt Piryk. Brad Muldoon was hit leading off the inning and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. He went to third on a flyout by Tim D'Aquila and scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Phil Rothkugel.
In the second inning, the Huskies took a 2-1 lead. Omar Pena (4-5, three RBIs) singled with one out and advanced to second when Matt Morizio walked with two outs. The runners advanced on a balk from CCSU starter Don Crossman and both scored on a single from shortstop Arman Sidhu (2-4, 2 RBIs). The Blue Devils tied the game 2-2 in the second inning as Rob Hosgood walked and stole second. He would later score on a single from Nick Macellaro.
In the third inning NU loaded the bases with no outs after a double from Chris Emanuele, a walk to Paul Koslowski and a single by Jeff Heriot. Miguel Paquette grounded into a double play to score a run, and Pena doubled to left field scoring the fourth run and giving the Huskies a 4-2 lead.
The Huskies scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to stretch the lead to 7-2. With one out, Pena reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second on a single by Brian Nutting. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and then a second wild pitch scored Pena and moved Nutting to third. He scored on an RBI single from Morizio. The third run scored after Sidhu singled and later got caught in a rundown, which allowed Morizio to score from third.
A pair of runs in the top of the seventh gave NU a 9-2 lead. Koslowski doubled and then scored on Jeff Maher's pinch-hit, two-out RBI double to center field. Pena singled in his second run of the game with his third hit to increase NU's lead.
CCSU scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a bases loaded walk to Scott Appleton. The Huskies added their final run in the top of the ninth, as Pena's fourth hit of the game drove in a run for a 10-3 advantage. The Blue Devils scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on an RBI single from Nick Mullins and a two-RBI double from Hosgood.
NU travels to Stony Brook for a pair of crucial America East doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
