The Huskies took their first loss of the season, a 3-2 defeat to No. 12 Boston College, on Wednesday at Sweeney Field. The loss drops the eighth-ranked Huskies to 6-1 on the season while BC improves to 5-2.
"I was disappointed by how we came out," said Husky head coach Cheryl Murtagh. "I think, mentally, we weren't ready. We had two good days of practice but the leadership wasn't there and the attitude wasn't there."
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Crystal Frates and Sabrina Lazzari at 8:33 and 10:42, respectively, before the Huskies evened the score at 2-2.
Liane Dixon scored her seventh goal of the season at 12:33 with an assist from Ally Bolster to make it 2-1. Less than two minutes later, Michaela O'Malley scored the first goal of her career on a rebound to even the score at 2-2 at 13:58.
A goal from BC's Sara York at 30:05 put the Eagles ahead, 3-2, heading into the break. Defense dominated the second half, as each team only managed two shots, and the score remained 3-2 for the final. The Huskies had two good scoring opportunities in the second, first when Dixon ran through the Eagle defense with 20 minutes remaining and the second on a shot by Mari Creatini, but BC's defense snuffed out both chances.
NU goalie Diana Nelson made four saves in the game. NU got 10 shots off, compared to eight for BC. The Eagles held a 4-2 advantage on penalty corners.
Northeastern travels to the University of Michigan this weekend for games against Central Michigan on Saturday and Michigan on Sunday.
