Diana Nelson made two big saves on shots by Princeton's Paige Schmidt in the final minutes as the Huskies stayed unbeaten (3-0) with a 2-1 victory over Princeton in a field hockey game played at Class of 1952 Stadium Friday evening. Jay Quinn scored to put Northeastern ahead late in the first half.
With her team protecting a one-goal lead in the final eight minutes, Nelson made similar diving stops to her right on Schmidt in a six-minute span to keep Northeastern ahead. The first came off a Tiger penalty-corner situation with 7:17 remaining, while the second came with just 1:22 left and would be the Tigers' final real opportunity to tie the game.
Quinn's game winner for Northeastern came with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. Liane Dixon had the initial shot on a Husky rush, and Quinn would score on a rebound attempt after an initial save from Princeton goalie Juliana Simon.
After a slow start offensively for the both teams, Princeton struck first with 14:53 left in the first half. Kelly Darling redirected a pass into the circle onto the stick of Alexis Martirosian, who scored past Nelson to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies would get the equalizer just 1:40 l ater. Mari Creatini's shot off a penalty-corner situation was stopped by Simon, but substitute Whitney Shean stuffed in the rebound to tie the score at 1-1.
Princeton outshot Northeastern 13-9 for the game and had six penalty corners to three for the Huskies.
In its next action, Northeastern plays Penn State at UConn on Sunday at noon.
