Northeastern Huskies

Field Hockey

Boston College 2, Northeastern 1

Whitney Shean scored her league-leading 15th goal of the season, but it wasn't enough to spur a Huskies comeback as the Northeastern field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Boston College on Saturday at Sweeney Field.

"Today is a big disappointment," Northeastern head coach Cheryl Murtagh said. "We did come out at them, but we can't let them have one or two opportunities and score."

The first half was a tight, defensive battle. The game remained scoreless for most of the period and the two teams combined for just four shots. The Eagles broke through first late in the period just after a penalty corner at 27:56 when Kristen Madden sent a pass from Bob Dirks to the back of the net. BC maintained the 1-0 lead through halftime.

Early in the second half, the Eagles added to their lead. Lauren Parks was awarded a penalty stroke at 44:29 and converted, sending the shot above Husky goalkeeper Colleen Duffy. The Huskies tried to mount a comeback with Shean's goal, a deflection from Lauren Edelmeier at 59:06, but NU could not get anything more past a tough Eagles defense.

Boston College outshot the Huskies, 8-5, in the game. Duffy made one save while BC keeper Jillian Savoy made two saves.

The No. 10 Huskies return to Sweeney Field on Friday for a crucial Colonial Athletic Association matchup with No. 8 Old Dominion. The two teams currently sit atop the standings with the CAA's only undefeated league records. The battle for first place faces off at 2:30 p.m.
