Northeastern Huskies

Field Hockey

Northeastern 3, Harvard 2 (SO)

The Northeastern field hockey team won its 11th straight game in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, going to a strokeoff before earning a 3-2 victory over Harvard at Sweeney Field.

The game remained scoreless through much of the first half. The Huskies were able to capitalize on a penalty corner and get on the board in the 22nd minute when Sarah Eckhoff passed to Jay Quinn, who scored her ninth goal of the season to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead. The score remained that way through halftime.

The Crimson earned the equalizer in the 36th minute when Jen McDavitt shot a rebound into the net. The game remained knotted at one goal each until the closing minutes of the second half. Rachel Wilkes scored her third goal of the year with less than four minutes remaining, giving the Huskies the 2-1 lead. Harvard did not back down, though, and struck again two minutes later when Beverlie Ting deflected a shot from Devon Shapiro into the net the tie the game at two goals each and set the stage for overtime.

The two teams battled through 30 minutes of overtime without scoring another goal. Each team had several chances on penalty corners, but was unable to capitalize.

With the score still tied after two overtime periods, a best-of-five strokeoff was in order, matching two freshman goalkeepers who lead their respective leagues in goals against average, NU's Colleen Duffy and Harvard's Kelly Knoche. Jay Quinn scored for the Huskies on her stroke to lead things off. Duffy stopped the first Crimson stroke from Tamara Sobek-Rosnick to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The two teams matched each other's shots for the next three rounds, giving Whitney Shean the chance to win the game on the Huskies' final stroke. Her shot beat Knoche to give the Huskies a 3-2 win in the game.

"I'm very happy that we scored those five strokes," Northeastern head coach Cheryl Murtagh said. "We practice that every day."

The No. 11 Huskies are now 12-1, their best start in program history, and continue an eleven-game winning streak that is now the team's longest since 1997.

The Huskies take the field again on Friday at 4 p.m. when they put their undefeated Colonial Athletic Association record on the line at Drexel. The team returns home to Sweeney Field to begin its toughest stretch of the season; three straight against nationally ranked teams, beginning with No. 15 Connecticut on Wed., Oct. 12 at 3 p.m.
