The Northeastern baseball team opened up its 2005 season with a loss to Northwestern, 7-1, on Saturday in Bradenton, Fla.
Adam Ottavino started for NU (0-1) and held Northwestern (3-3) scoreless for the first two innings, but he was touched up in the third when Mark Ori singled home Aaron Newman to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Ottavino (0-1) got into more trouble in the fifth when a Mike Lyon error allowed Jon Mikrut to reach base with only one out. Ottavino walked the next batter, Antonio Mule, and then gave up an RBI single to Anthony Wycklendt, making it 2-0. That ended Ottavino's day; the pitcher went 4-1/3 innings, allowing six hits and two runs, one of which was unearned.
Northwestern put the game out of reach with three more runs in the fifth and two in the eighth.
The Huskies finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth when Arman Sidhu, who reached on an error by Wildcat third baseman Mike Phelps, scored on Tim Bush's infield single.
Both teams had plenty of chances to score - Northwestern had 10 hits and eight walks, but left 13 men on base. The Huskies had only five hits and drew six walks, but left 10 men on base.
Northwestern's George Kontos (1-0) pitched seven solid innings for the win. He allowed no runs, two hits, five walks, and struck out eight.
The Huskies return to action tomorrow versus Mt. St. Mary's at 2:30 p.m. in Bradenton, Fla. The scheduled starter for NU is Dave Pellegrine.
