The Northeastern baseball team picked up its first win of the season, defeating Seton Hall, 5-0, on the strength of senior Devin Monds' seven shutout innings and three hits and two runs scored by junior Chris Emanuele.
The Huskies (1-1) kept the Pirates (1-4) off the scoreboard despite allowing ten baserunners. Monds (1-0) went seven innings, allowing five hits and three walks, but when it mattered most, he got the big outs. Seton Hall went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
NU got the scoring started in the third inning when senior Jeff Heriot smacked a triple to right center, scoring Emanuele, who had doubled two batters earlier.
In the fourth with junior Jeff Maher on first, junior Matt Morizio doubled down the right field line, bringing home the runner and giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
Northeastern chased Pirates starter Marc Negro (0-1) in the sixth as senior Tim Bush and freshman Jeff Thomson led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Seton Hall shortstop Michael Young came in to pitch and gave up a sacrifice bunt to Maher and then a sacrifice fly to Morizio, scoring Bush and putting NU on top, 3-0.
Senior Miguel Paquette tacked on a run in the seventh with an RBI double, scoring Emanuele. Junior Arman Sidhu, who went 2-5 on the day, capped the scoring with an RBI double in the eighth, bringing home Morizio.
Senior Jim Madison relieved Monds in the eighth and pitched a scoreless inning. Bush came on in the ninth and recorded two strikeouts.
The Huskies return to the field tomorrow in a doubleheader versus Mt. St. Mary's in Bradenton, Fla. The first game is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sophomore Dave Pellegrine will take the mound in the first game while freshman Jeff Thomson is scheduled to start the second game.
