The Northeastern baseball team scored six runs in the fourth inning after falling behind 2-0 and defeated Mount. St. Mary's, 9-2, in the first game of a doubleheader at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla.
The Huskies (2-1) batted around in the six-run fourth. With one man on, down 2-1 and facing Mountaineers (1-2) starter Steve Stone (0-1), junior Brian Nutting doubled to deep left center, scoring junior Matt Morizio. Junior Chris Emanuele followed with an RBI triple to give NU the lead. Junior Arman Sidhu and senior Jeff Heriot each walked, Emanuele scoring on a wild pitch. Senior Miguel Paquette then laced a single down the right field line, scoring Sidhu and Heriot and making the score 6-2.
Sophomore Dave Pellegrine (1-0) did the rest on the mound, going eight strong innings and allowing just four hits, two runs and three walks while striking out six. After giving up two runs in the third frame, he allowed only two hitters to reach base in his last five innings.
Northeastern added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth. With Paquette on second base and two outs in the seventh, pinch-hitter sophomore Dan Milano drove a pitch from Craig Henson over the left field wall for his first home run of the season in only his third at-bat. In the eighth, Nutting popped another double into deep left and scored on Sidhu's RBI single.
Sophomore Tristan Besse closed the game out with a scoreless ninth for the Huskies.
NU will play the second game of the doubleheader against Mount. St. Mary's at 1:15 p.m.
