Mount. St. Mary's eeked out a 3-2 win in extra innings to split a doubleheader with Northeastern in Bradenton, Fla. after the Huskies had defeated the Mountaineers, 9-2, in game one.
Mount. St. Mary's (2-2) scored the winning run in the eighth inning when NU freshman pitcher Kris Dabrowiecki relieved starter Jeff Thomson after the freshman began to feel soreness in his elbow. Dabrowiecki walked the first two batters he faced and then Mountaineers pinch-hitter Matt Trusch bunted down the third base line, attempting to sacrifice. However, senior Tim Bush's throw skipped away from second baseman Brian Nutting, allowing the winning run to cross home plate.
The game was mostly a pitcher's duel between Thomson and Mountaineers hurler Dustin Pease. Thomson threw seven innings, giving up just four hits and two runs while Pease held on for 6-2/3 innings, also allowing only four hits and two runs.
Mount. St. Mary's got on the board first with two runs in the second on an RBI groundout by Joe Diserio. Matt Elden followed with an RBI groundout of his own and gave the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead.
NU (2-2) answered quickly in the top of third when Josh Porter and Chris Emanuele hit back-to-back singles giving NU runners on first and third and only one out. Arman Sidhu then hit a long fly to left, allowing Porter to tag up and score. Jeff Heriot followed with a fly to center that Jim Serafin mishandled, allowing Emanuele to score and tie the game.
However, Thomson and Pease posted zeroes on the board the rest of the way until the Mountaineers won it in the eighth.
Bucky Kosyk (1-0) takes the win for MSM after pitching 1-1/3 innings and giving up just one hit. Dabrowiecki (0-1) takes the loss.
The Huskies will travel south tomorrow to Coral Gables, Fla. to play Miami at 7 p.m. Sophomore Adam Ottavino is scheduled to pitch for Northeastern.
